    REPS Activity

    Gas water heater or solar gas means a water heater that has a primary or boost fuel source of natural gas (methane) or LPG. Class 1 and class 2 dwellings are as defined by the National Construction Code.

    (1) The water heater must be installed in accordance with relevant installation standards including, but not limited, to AS/NZS 3500:2018 (plumbing and drainage standards); AS/NZS 3500.4:2018 (Plumbing and drainage – Heated water services), AS 4552:2010 (gas hot water systems); AS/NZS 60335.2.21:2013 (electric storage water heaters); AS/NZS 60335.2.35:2004 (instantaneous water heaters).
    (2) All products shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturers’ installation instructions and specifications.
    (3) Any replaced water heater must be removed from the premises.
    (4) The activity must be completed and certified in accordance with any relevant code or codes of practice and other relevant legislation applying to the activity, including any licensing, registration, statutory approval, activity certification, health, safety, environmental or waste disposal requirements.
    (5) Where required, a Certificate of Compliance must be provided and retained for verification purposes.

    Install or replace a water heater.

    A new or replacement water heater installed to service a South Australian
    • established class 1 dwelling, or
    • class 2 dwelling (new or established), or
    • Small energy consuming customer

    The following is excluded:
    • Installation of a water heater undertaken as part of class 1 building work requiring approval under the Development Act 1993 or the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016. This includes water heaters installed to service a new class 1 dwelling.

    – Each REPS activity can only be provided once per address.

    (1) Only gas, solar electric, solar gas or heat pump water heaters are included in the specification.
    (2) Gas water heaters shall be rated at a minimum of 5 stars in accordance with AS4552 and listed in the Directory of AGA Certified Products.
    (3)(a) Solar electric and gas boosted solar systems with a tank size ≤ 220 litres installed before 1 January 2022 shall earn ≥ 17 STCs for Zone 3.
    (3)(b) Solar electric and gas boosted solar systems with a tank size ≤ 220 litres installed on or after 1 January 2022 shall earn ≥ 15 STCs for Zone 3.
    (4)(a) Solar electric and gas boosted solar systems 220 < tank size ≤ 400 litres installed before 1 January 2022 shall earn ≥ 27 STCs for Zone 3.
    (4)(b) Solar electric and gas boosted solar systems 220 < tank size ≤ 400 litres installed on or after 1 January 2022 shall earn ≥ 24 STCs for Zone 3.
    (5)(a) Solar electric and gas boosted solar systems 400 < tank size ≤ 700 litres installed before 1 January 2022 shall earn ≥ 38 STCs for Zone 3.
    (5)(b) Solar electric and gas boosted solar systems 400 < tank size ≤ 700 litres installed on or after 1 January 2022 shall earn ≥ 34 STCs for Zone 3.
    (6)(a) Heat pump water heaters installed before 1 January 2022 shall earn ≥ 27 STCs when assessed under AS/NZS 4234 for Zone 3 and shall earn ≥ 26 STCs when assessed under AS/NZS 4234 for Zone 4.
    (6)(b) Heat pump water heaters installed on or after 1 January 2022 shall earn ≥ 24 STCs when assessed under AS/NZS 4234 for Zone 3 and shall earn ≥ 23 STCs when assessed under AS/NZS 4234 for Zone 4.

    Heat Pump Hot Water

    All installations are subject to a site assessment, and YESS reserves the right to decline to provide a quotation or undertake an installation where the works are assessed as unsafe, impractical, excessively complex, or beyond the scope of works YESS is able to perform.
    Quotations are valid for 14 days from the date of issue. To accept the quotation, a deposit of $1,000 is required within the validity period. The remaining balance is payable in full on the day of installation, prior to completion of the works.

    Advertised offers apply only to hot water systems supplied and installed by YESS. All advertised prices include applicable REPS and STC discounts. To receive the discounted price, the customer must sign the required REPS documentation on or before the day of installation. If the required documentation is not signed, REPS discounts cannot be applied and the customer will be responsible for the full retail cost of the hot water system and its installation.

    • This offer is only valid for customers in the Greater Adelaide area.
    • This offer is available only to established Class 1 dwellings and does not apply to new builds or other building classifications.
    • Rebate eligibility and rebate values vary depending on the customer’s Priority Group eligibility (including concession status), the property’s energy connection, and the make and model of the replacement hot water system.
    • Customers may only access this rebate once per household.
    • This offer is not available to households replacing existing gravity-fed or solar hot water systems.

    Priority Group Eligibility must be provided and verified to receive this discount.
    The Minister for Energy and Mining defines a Priority Group household as residential premises in which a person resides who:
    Holds a Commonwealth Government Pensioner Concession Card
    Holds a TPI Gold Repatriation Health Card
    Holds a War Widows Gold Repatriation Health Card
    Holds a Gold Repatriation Health Card (EDA)
    Holds a Health Care Card (including a Low Income Health Care Card)
    Receives the South Australian Government Energy Bill Concession
    Has a residential tenancy agreement with rent of $500 or less per week
    Is actively participating in an energy retailer hardship program
    Is actively participating in an energy retailer payment plan (offered under Section 50 of the National Energy Retail Law)
    Has received a referral from a registered member of the South Australian Financial Counsellors Association (SAFCA)

    Common Questions

    A heat pump hot water system works a bit like a fridge in reverse. Instead of pulling heat out of the fridge and releasing it outside, it takes heat from the surrounding air and transfers it into a water cylinder. This process can heat the water up to around 60 °C, while the air around the unit becomes cooler.

    Heat pump hot water systems (HWS) come in two main types: split and integrated.

    • Split systems keep the storage cylinder separate from the evaporator, fan, and compressor, connected by refrigerant piping. They’re usually quieter and more efficient, but come at a higher price.
    • Integrated systems combine everything in one unit, with the storage cylinder at the bottom and the working parts on top.


    Both options work well, though at YESS we often see integrated systems more commonly.

    A heat pump is a clever device that moves heat from one place to another, which makes it useful for heating, cooling, and even refrigeration. The best everyday example is your fridge. At the back, down near the bottom, there’s a small compressor that pushes a special fluid called refrigerant around. As it cycles, the fridge pulls heat out from inside and dumps it out the back. That heat then drifts upward, while the inside of the fridge gets chilled over time.

    Yes! Heat pumps use 60–75% less energy than conventional hot water systems. With rising natural gas prices and increasing regulations, they’re also a smart, future-ready alternative.

    Not really! Heat pumps can work almost anywhere, even in cold climates. They draw on the heat that’s always present—much like a fridge pulls heat from its interior. While heat pump hot water systems are most efficient in warmer conditions, households in the Adelaide Hills or southern parts of the state can still enjoy strong performance and worthwhile savings throughout winter compared to traditional electric or gas systems.

    (And when we say “heat,” we mean energy—so even when it feels cold to us, there’s still usable heat for the pump.)

    Yes—but much less than traditional hot water systems! Heat pumps are smart and energy-efficient, and you can save even more if you plan carefully.

    • Timers or smart apps – Even without solar, you can schedule your heat pump to run during off-peak or cheaper electricity times, keeping costs down.
    • Holiday mode – Many systems let you reduce heating to a minimum while you’re away, so energy isn’t wasted.
    • Solar or battery power – If you have solar panels (or solar plus a battery), your heat pump can run on clean, renewable energy. That’s a big win for low-cost, green living.

    Not really. Good models run at 40–50 dB—a low hum, similar to a fridge or air conditioner. Advanced insulation and vibration-reduction technology keep noise minimal. If you’re concerned, unit placement can be optimised during installation. Make a note on the YESS’ expression of interest form to explore options.

    Most heat pumps are made in China, but origin doesn’t always determine quality. Some Chinese-made models are world class. Some units are assembled or repackaged in Australia using imported components. If you have a preference, just ask before purchasing.

    The reheat rate (or recovery rate) is how fast a heat pump can heat water back up for use, measured in litres per hour. It’s important if your household uses a lot of hot water. If you’re more conservative, it may not matter much—but if you love long hot showers, choose a system with a strong reheat rate so you’re never left cold.

    Some heat pumps also have backup boosters to help when the outside air is cooler.

    Other factors that affect how quickly your water heats:

    • Ambient conditions – air temperature, humidity, and how well the area around the unit is ventilated.
    • System design – split systems with Japanese-made compressors perform best, though they come at a premium.
    • Incoming water temperature – colder in winter, warmer in summer.

    Warranties usually cover a few key parts:

    • Tank/cylinder: 5 years
    • Heat pump/compressor: 5 years
    • Labour: 2 years
    • Other parts (like the electronic controller): 2–5 years

    Remember, a warranty is only as good as the company behind it. Always check both the coverage and that you’re comfortable with the supplier—after all, a long warranty doesn’t help if the company can’t honour it.

    Picking the right size ensures hot water when you need it, without paying for more than you use.

    • Bigger isn’t always better – If your household uses water steadily throughout the day, a smaller tank with a strong recovery rate can be more effective than a huge tank.
    • Peak usage matters – If everyone showers around the same time, a larger tank makes sure there’s plenty of hot water quickly.

    Tank sizes (typical):

    • 150–200 L → 1–3 people
    • 300–400 L → 6+ people
